CIRCLE DESCRIPTION
Do you want to break into Animation, VFX, or games as an FX animator but have no idea where to start? Do you dream of animating amazing moments in new classic titles? Do you geek out at the idea of creating cool explosions, gorgeous blooming flowers, crashing waves, or monster fire? Then this circle is for you!
In Breaking in as an FX Animator, you will learn the essentials of what it takes to get started in this part of the industry.
By the end of the term, you will:
- understand the FX Pipeline – how FX fits into the production process and the various jobs related to FX that help get the job done
- know how to set yourself up to apply for and land jobs by creating strong resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, portfolios, etc
- have a clear picture of how recruiting works and the job application process
- learn how to show up professionally so that recruiters and bosses take notice of you
- develop tools for managing the stresses and anxieties that come along with making the leap into the industry

Mariam Hamed
Mariam Hamed is a Senior FX artist at Blizzard Entertainment and Houdini instructor at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, renowned for her contributions to acclaimed animated features. With a career spanning over 5 years, Mariam has established herself in the field, blending technical expertise with a passion for storytelling.
Mariam’s career highlights include collaborations with industry giants such as DreamWorks Features, where she lent her talents to projects like “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken,” and “Kungfu Panda 4.” Her work on Disney’s Oscar-winning feature animation “Encanto” further solidified her reputation for delivering captivating visual effects that elevate narrative storytelling. Additionally, Mariam has made significant contributions to the small screen, with notable credits on the Netflix series “Love, Death, and Robots” and to the Game industry by working on multiple cinematics, including “Magic: The Gathering” and “World of Warcraft.”
As an educator, Mariam believes in nurturing both technical proficiency and artistic vision. Drawing from her experience in the industry, she is dedicated to empowering the next generation of artists with the skills and inspiration needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving environment.
