CIRCLE DESCRIPTION

I do not write, draw, animate, nor have I graduated from business school. Despite this, I have somehow survived 28 years in the computer animation industry, including 21 years as the president of a multiple-award-winning studio with locations in Tokyo, Malaysia, and India. With this experience, I now consider myself an expert in running creative organizations. In this discussion circle, I would like to share some of my guiding principles.

Circle Leader

Shuzo Shiota

Shuzo John Shiota is a bi-cultural, multiple award-winning producer and the President and CEO of Polygon Pictures. After beginning his business career with Nippon Steel Corporation in 1991, Shuzo transitioned into the entertainment industry by joining the launch of Dream Pictures Studio in 1996. Three years later, he moved to Polygon Pictures and ultimately assumed the position of President and CEO in 2003.

As studio head, Shuzo has spearheaded efforts to promote Polygon’s global presence, solidifying its position as one of Asia’s most respected studios. He has received numerous awards, including multiple Emmy Awards, the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival Special Achievement Award, and the Animation Magazine Hall of Fame Award in 2023.

Additionally, Shuzo has served as a juror for many prestigious film festivals, including Prix Ars Electronica (Austria), SIGGRAPH (U.S.), and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (France). He also volunteers for multiple creative communities, including serving as Conference Chair for SIGGRAPH Asia in 2021 and initiating Trojan Horse was a Unicorn (THU) Japan in 2023. On a personal note, Shuzo is a total foodie and still hasn’t given up on his dream to become a rock star.
