CIRCLE DESCRIPTION

This circle is designed for motion designers who want to get better at standing up for themselves and their talents. It’s a space to help you step into your full creative power, break through self-imposed limits, and gain the skills to confidently advocate for your value—whether it’s for pay, position, or opportunities.

By the end of this circle, you’ll have the tools to confidently shape your career, advocate for your goals, and celebrate the creative spirit that brought you here.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Communicating your accomplishments with confidence
  • Recognizing qualifying and self-deprecating language: let’s talk about ‘just’
  • Identifying career goals and how to talk about them to managers and supervisors
  • Strategies for setting healthy boundaries around work, both with employers and clients
  • How to say “no” effectively
  • Presenting a case for promotion or rate increase
  • Building confidence to ask for what you deserve
  • Overcoming common fears around discussing money
  • Networking strategies, even for the introverted
  • Tracking trends, but keeping your voice your own
  • And more!

We’ll also make space for that imaginative, excited kid inside of you—the one who just wants to create for the sake of creating. In this circle, you’ll learn how to balance that creative drive with the demands of a career, understanding how to advocate for yourself and your vision without compromising your unique voice.

Circle Leader

Rachel Oftedahl

Rachel is 3D artist who loves to faff around and play and learn, and bring her skills to bear to solve complex pieces of an animation project.

There is so much power in the visual, and she loves nothing more than to collaborate with other people to create beautiful and informative imagery.

Rachel also spent the better part of a decade teaching 3D and motion design at Columbia College, DePaul, and the School of the Art Institute here in Chicago, with a primary lesson that all of these bits of software and hardware are just a lot of complicated pencils. YOU are the artist, and you have to understand how the tools work so you can craft your vision.
